Richard W. Keefe, President

 

Richard Keefe is a highly accomplished executive with over thirty years of experience in the creation, implementation, management, or improvement of multi-million dollar fund raising and philanthropic programs both here and abroad.  He also earned a master’s degree in political science at Boston College. Mr. Keefe is senior administrator with particular focus on fund-raising and international agreements..

Carolann Sharkey, Treasurer Carolann Sharkey has both teaching and business degrees from Rutgers University. She co-owned a New York City-based marketing and sales company for over 20 years until moving to the the Florida Keys. During the past 11 years, she founded the Key West Tropical Forest and Garden, doubling the size of the old historic garden and creating many new programs. Ms Sharkey wears many “hats” for the TREE Institute overseeing marketing, administration, education, and finance.

Dr. Mary Chambers, Secretary

 

Owner of an education consulting firm active in establishing charter schools, Dr. Chambers has a PhD in Education Leadership from the University of Florida, Gainesville, is a member of the Governor’s Education Advisory Council and a former Superintendent of Schools in Florida.  With her other degrees in accounting and public administration, as well as being a Florida licensed CPA, she is very active in the Institute’s education programs and financial oversight.

Russell Moore, Vice President Russell Moore has national and international experience as a land planner, urban planner and landscape architect. He has done numerous ecological projects in the Florida Keys and the Caribbean and has years of experience working with governmental agencies. Mr. Moore oversees, plans and manages the institute’s public projects.

Elsy Aumann: Venezuelan born founder of Graphic Vision Creative Group is award-winning graphic designer, brand development strategist and photographer with over 25 years experience.

 

Marti Betz: BFA/MA in Graphic Design with over 20 years experience & 7 years experience with web design. Consults on design & marketing needs of TREE to include website, logo, brochures, & social media design & maintenance.

 

Dean Carlson:  Hospitality industry consultant; former owner of #1  Bed & Breakfast in Key West; past president of the Key West Botanical Garden Society.

 

Mercedes Costa:  Miami-based owner/founder of CDI, an air cargo company & DMC, a travel company providing TREE with administrative organization of all trips & consultant to overall travel program.

 

Miguel Coyula: Award winning Cuban documentary film maker who assists TREE with all its video needs.

 

Douglas Fernandez:  Cuban environmentalist and butterfly expert, a passion &dedication of his since childhood.

Dr. Brittany Graff: PhD ethnobotanist, pharmacologist and phytochemist who

specializes in investigation & development of medicinal plants of Latin America. Initiated research along with Dr. Raskin at Otero Research Center.

 

Luis Mazariegas: Founder of LAM Int'l Corp., world leadeer in bioinsecticides. Also, Executive Director of Humingbird Fdn in Colombia.

 

Dr. Marc Minno: A conservation scientist with a PhD in Zoology from the U of Fl & has over 21 years of experience as an interdisciplinary scientist. Field research in the Americas, Caribbean, Europe & India, inc. work in Cuba for TREE on imperiled species.

 

Dr. Rayner Nunez: Cuban researcher and butterfly expert.

 

Lazaro Ojeda: PhD in Agriculture from U of Havana; former Director, Cienfuegos Botanical Garden; medicinal plant ground co-ordinator for TREE at Otero Research Center.

 

Doris Quintana: International Relations Director at the Union of Cuban Jurists an Havana; consultant to TREE on all Cuban legal matters.

Dr. Stuart L. Pimm: Conservation Ecology Professor at Duke University's Nichols School of the Environment & Earth Sciences; founder of Saving Species & former TREE president.

 

Dr. Ilya Raskin: Internationally known academic researcher in plant  biology & pharmacology with over 25 years experience & 5 years experience in industrial research in plant biotechnology. Founder/President of GIBEX. Professor of Plant Sciences at Rutgers. Active partner with TREE.

 

Renier Rodriguez:  A former English teacher in Havana, he has worked in ecotourism for over 20 years, the past 8 for TREE. As a senior guide, he helps educate the next generation of guides. He is on-ground manager for TREE's Cuba activities. His wonderful sense of humor is captured in his favorite phrase: "Welcome to Cuba! Where every-thing is possible …, but nothing is guaranteed!!!!

 

Jean & Clark Shannon: Early financial supporters and adventuresome travelers with TREE who went with TREE on first flight to Havana from Key West in 50 years!

Maitte VanArsdal: Colombian-American translator for TREE & Facebook coordinator; architect & artist by trade.

 

Dr. Raul Verdecia: One of Cuba's most preeminent botanists and palm specialists. Former Environmental Director in Las Tunas Province where he established protected area systems.  Former Director of Las Tunas  Botanical Garden. Current researcher at Cupaynicu BG & TREE representative or eastern Cuba.

 

In Memorium: Dr. Mario Coyula: Former City of Havana Architect and Planner who introduced TREE to many of his associates to facilitate the completion of several projects. He was a very popular and informative speaker to our fellow travelers. He will be missed!
